1. Beach sand is ground into the carpet by our front door and up the stairs. Can that actually come out?

   Most of it can. Sand is the main soil we pull out of Santa Monica carpets, and it behaves differently from ordinary dirt. The grains are abrasive and they migrate to the base of the pile, right down against the backing, especially in the first few feet inside a door and on stair treads and nosings. That means dry soil removal matters as much as the hot water extraction: thorough vacuuming and agitation first to lift the grit, then extraction. What we can't reverse is the wear the sand has already caused. On older low-pile carpet you'll sometimes see traffic lanes that stay dull after cleaning because the fiber itself is scuffed. We'll tell you which it is before we start rather than after.

2. How long will the carpet stay damp with the marine layer and the windows shut?

   Longer than the numbers you'll read online, and we plan for it. Morning dew points near the coast are high, and most people here keep windows closed against ocean air, so there's little natural air exchange to carry moisture out. We control the water we put in, extract in more passes than we would inland, and set air movers on the damp areas before we leave. If you have AC or a dehumidifier, running it after we go helps more than opening a window on a foggy morning. We'll give you a realistic window for your specific rooms. A ground-floor bungalow with dense pad dries differently than a condo bedroom with low-pile over thin cushion.

3. There's a musty smell in the bedroom that comes back even after cleaning. What causes it?

   Usually the pad, not the carpet face. In older bungalows and Spanish duplexes the cushion underneath has been down a long time, and in this climate it holds moisture and takes on odor that surface cleaning can't reach. Sunscreen and body oils tracked in from the beach add to it on runners and near beds. We'll check whether the odor is in the fiber, in the pad, or coming from the subfloor, and treat what's actually causing it. If it's saturated pad, we'll say so. Replacement is the honest answer in that case, and we'd rather tell you than sell you a deodorizer that fades in a week.

4. I have wool and sisal rugs over hardwood. Do you clean those the same way?

   No. Wool needs a lower-moisture approach, careful pH, and controlled drying, or you risk browning, dye bleed, and shrinkage. Sisal and other plant fibers are less forgiving still and can water-stain or ripple if they're over-wet, so those get a dry or low-moisture method where appropriate, and some sisal we'll recommend not wet-cleaning at all. We also protect the hardwood underneath. With the humidity here, leaving a damp rug lying on a wood floor is how you get cupping and dark marks. 5. What does it cost, and can you come the same day?

   The estimate is free and we give you a firm quote before any work begins, so there's no figure that changes once we're in the room. What moves the price: how many rooms and stairs, carpet versus wool or sisal rugs, how deep the sand has worked into the pile, whether pet or pad odor treatment is needed, and access. A walk-up unit in a rent-controlled building with street parking takes more time than a ground-floor bungalow with a driveway. Same-day is sometimes possible if we have an opening, though afternoon slots go first because we schedule the longer-drying jobs early to give them the rest of the day.
